Ecological Restoration
Nature Based Solutions
Our team has the ability to deliver science-based solutions to environmental challenges at the landscape, watershed/catchment and individual land parcel scale.
We improve water abundance and quality by working with nature to bolster biodiversity and ecosystem services.
One of the best ways to improve water quality of streams in agricultural and urban areas is to plant native trees, shrubs and grasses. These planted areas are called “riparian buffers.” They are highly effective at preventing soil contaminated with pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals from entering into streams and rivers. Riparian buffers provide shade to keep water cool, help stabilize the stream banks, and create habitat for wildlife.
If enough riparian habitat is created, then wildlife migration corridors can be restored and indigenous species (aquatic and terrestrial) can move freely, find good spawning and rearing habitat, and grow their populations.
Our approach to forest regeneration is to get the Right Plants (eco-sourced) in the Right Place (ecotype) and at the Right Time (community readiness). We facilitate the community to gather local knowledge, develop a shared vision, and identify their local champions to lead the change they want to see. This process takes time and the first step may be small, but something as simple as collecting seed from local, native plants can be the catalyst for change.
“Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed... Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders”.
