Managed Aquifer Recharge: An Introduction

Project Purpose

This Hinds/Hekeao Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) Pilot Project was designed to evaluate the use of purposeful recharge to help replenish declining groundwater levels, restore flows in the coastal drains and improve water quality in the underlying shallow aquifer. Whilst a relatively new concept for the Canterbury Plains, MAR has been proven worldwide to be an effective water management tool for enhancing the economic, environmental and cultural benefits gained from a sustainably managed groundwater system.
